In 1944, there was much local activity leading to that date, for the Naval Air Station had been upgrading training for pilots, some of who might be engaged in the ETO, and planning was in progress to make Pensacola Bay a center for development of convoys which would carry supplies to equip the allied invaders.įor the United States, World War II had almost literally turned about in 1942. That was termed D-Day at the time, and the functions that day were a climax to the buildup which brought the finale in Europe of World War II. We publicly remember Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, but somehow many parties have forgotten the events of June 6, 1944.
